CinéDuel

Two films, one pick, and a streak that keeps going until you get one wrong. Then two more modes that make you prove you actually know the films you claim to love.

The.Brief

Why it exists

A movie game where every fact comes from a real database and nothing is invented. If the app tells you who directed a film or what year it came out, that came from the catalogue, not from a language model guessing.

The point was a small, fast, replayable loop that survives a subway ride, with enough depth underneath that a film obsessive can narrow the pool to exactly what they want to be quizzed on.

Every fact in the game comes from the catalogue. Nothing is generated.

The pieces

01

Duel

Two films face off, the winner stays on and defends its streak. Sub modes pit directors against directors and actors against actors from their own filmographies.

02

Guess

One film, one question per title across ten titles: the director, the year, or one of the cast.

03

Blind ranking

Five films arrive one at a time and you place each in a slot without knowing what is coming next. Then your order is scored against the real one.

04

Filters that go deep

Decade, genre, exact year, minimum score, top rated and top grossing presets, or search by a specific director or actor and play only their work.

05

Collections

One tap starts: new releases, best of the year, blockbusters by decade, top rated ever, animation and family.

06

Installable app

The store bound build lives on its own subdomain and installs to the home screen like a native app.

How it holds up

JavaScriptTMDB APIPHP cronJSON cataloguePWA

The catalogue holds roughly ten thousand popular titles and is rebuilt weekly by a scheduled task that pulls fresh ratings, vote counts and posters, so new releases appear without a deploy. Searching a person merges their full filmography into the pool, which lets the ranking mode reach films outside the main catalogue.

Difficulty controls which slice of fame the game draws from rather than awarding bonus points, so an easy round is genuinely easier and not just worth less. When a filter combination leaves too few films to play, the app says so instead of starting a broken round.

Why.This.Matters

The same engine runs your back office.

Access rules, live data, billing, bilingual interfaces, systems people use every day without thinking about them. What changes from one project to the next is the subject, not the level of the build.
